Susan Stillman, EdD

Susan Stillman, EdD Emeritus Director of Education

My Noble Goal is... To support others to live lives fueled with empathy and optimism, to create a more compassionate and just world

My work is about... As Emerita Director of Education, I work with others to develop and strengthen social, emotional, and equitable teaching and learning environments and tools for K-20 educators, students, and community

Professional accomplishments include... I worked with others to grow and develop the Six Seconds Education focus, Benchmarks, Self Science global curriculum, and EQ Educator certification. I certified many Six Seconds global network members in EQPC, EQE, Brain Profiles, and YVAC. I've engaged in numerous research projects demonstrating the power of emotional intelligence and 6S process, tools, and methods, and I've published numerous articles and books supporting this vision.

 A few past experiences...

... After college, I moved to Vermont, lived for a while on a commune, worked as a mental health clinician and an independent school counselor and enjoyed the birth and early years of my two sons.
... To advance our careers, my husband Paul and I moved to a rural suburb in Connecticut where I became a school counselor at a K-8 school, spearheading the first social emotional learning initiative there.
... In my first faculty position at a university, I was mentored by extraordinary educators and discovered the joy of teaching social emotional learning to adults.
... After completing my doctorate, one evening, to my great surprise, I received a phone call from Josh Freedman, asking me to become the first Director of Education for Six Seconds.
-... An awesome experience for me is to have traveled and hiked extensively in Europe, and I hope to spend more time in France this summer and in the years to come. "

One reason I’m personally passionate about emotional intelligence is….I’ve seen the power of emotional intelligence in my own family, to transform communication, reduce conflict, promote reconciliation, and develop empathic, caring, sustaining bonds

Background...My parents were born in Europe and, escaping the Holocaust, were able to emigrate to New York, where I was born. I am a first generation university graduate.

Favorite... Travel and I am grateful to have the health and opportunity to do more

I'd love to talk to you about ...  developing your expertise in social emotional learning, in K-12 and Higher Ed. I also like to discuss the work of the Non-Human Rights Project
